- On 10th. January 1838 the building was almost completely destroyed in a fire. Although, even in those early days, some 20 fire engines attended the building was lost because none had the pump power to get water above 1st. floor level. It was incredibly cold and the firemens' hands froze to the pumps and nozzles. There was no nightwatchman and it is believed that the fire remained undiscovered for 2 hours before the alarm was raised.
After the Exchange was rebuilt, they had their own fire engine.
Their manual pump stood in the entrance hall of the Exchange. |
